Indian sandstone has become one of the most popular patio materials in the last decade or so, and it's the surface we get called out for most. It's a beautiful, porous stone, and that porosity is exactly why it needs careful handling: the wrong chemical or too much pressure can pull colour out of the stone or leave it looking worse than before we started. We know how Indian stone behaves and we treat it accordingly, not with a generic driveway cleaner.

The right chemicals for the right stone

Getting the chemistry right matters more on patios than almost any other job we do. Concrete flags, natural sandstone, limestone and porcelain all need different treatment, and using the wrong one can strip sealant, etch the surface or set staining in permanently rather than removing it. We choose the correct chemicals for the specific stone in front of us, which is the difference between a patio that comes up beautifully and one that comes up damaged.

Black spot: the problem everyone asks about

If you've got dark, tar-like black spots on your Indian stone patio that won't scrub off, that's a specific type of lichen that bonds into the surface of the stone rather than sitting on top of it. Ordinary cleaning won't shift it. We use a targeted black spot removal treatment designed for exactly this problem, which is one of the most common calls we get on sandstone patios across Teesside.

Once a patio's been properly cleaned, sealing it makes a real difference to how long that clean lasts. A good sealer brings out the natural colour of the stone and closes the surface up a little, so algae and dirt find it harder to take hold again.
