Why teak turns grey

Teak is one of the toughest woods you can put in a garden, but left untreated outdoors it weathers to a dull silvery grey within a season or two. That's the wood's natural reaction to sun and rain, not damage as such, but it's also grime, algae and general dirt sitting in the grain that most people mistake for the wood just "going old". A tired-looking teak table or bench is usually a lot more restorable than it looks.

How we bring it back

We start with a thorough clean, working into the grain to lift out built-up dirt, algae and the grey weathered surface layer without damaging the wood underneath. Once it's clean and dry, we apply a teak oil that feeds the wood, restores its natural warm colour, and gives it a bit of protection against the next round of Teesside weather. The difference between a piece before and after is usually dramatic, furniture that looked ready for the tip often comes back looking genuinely worth keeping.

Why oiling matters as much as cleaning

Cleaning alone gets rid of the surface dirt and greying, but it's the oiling that actually protects the wood going forward. Teak has natural oils that give it weather resistance, and those oils get washed and worn out over years outdoors, oiling replaces them, which is why a cleaned-but-unoiled piece will grey back over again within a few months while an oiled one holds its colour much longer. It's the step that turns a one-off clean into something closer to proper restoration.

Worth doing before you replace it

We regularly see teak furniture that looks past saving from a distance, grey all over, stained, maybe a bit of green algae in shaded corners, come back looking genuinely good once it's been cleaned and oiled properly. Solid teak is expensive to replace and, if it's structurally sound, restoration is almost always the better option than buying new, both for the wallet and because good teak sets can last decades if they're looked after.
